Machu Picchu: The Ultimate Guide

Machu Picchu, one of the world’s wonders, is nestled among breathtaking scenery, charming alpacas, and steeped in rich culture and history. While it’s a dream destination for many, careful planning is key to fully enjoy and appreciate the experience. This itinerary is a tried-and-true guide designed for travelers who want to visit Machu Picchu in a day with minimal hiking and maximum ease.

📌 Important Tips for Visiting Machu Picchu

First and foremost, securing your ticket to Machu Picchu is essential as entry is limited each day and often sells out. To avoid disappointment, plan to book at least three months in advance, especially if you’re traveling with a group and want flexibility in choosing your time slot.

Here are our top tips to help you prepare:

Buy your tickets from the official government websiteLINK

Bring your passport: Entry requires official identification, and your passport must be presented at the gate.

Print your tickets: Be sure to have printed copies of your train, bus, and Machu Picchu entry tickets. Cell service can be unreliable in the mountains, and digital tickets may not always be accessible.

Understand the circuits: Machu Picchu has multiple visiting circuits, each offering different levels of hiking and viewpoints. If you’re visiting for the day and want the most iconic views (perfect for photos) with minimal hiking, we recommend booking Circuit 2.

📍The Journey from Cusco to Machu Picchu

Arrange Your Taxi in Advance

If you’re staying at a hotel in Cusco, we recommend coordinating with the hotel staff ahead of time to schedule a taxi for both your early morning transfer to the train station and your return in the evening.

This is especially important if you’re departing from Poroy Station, where transportation options can be limited and sometimes unreliable. Pre-booking helps ensure a smooth and stress-free start and end to your day.

Important tip: Avoid driving to Poroy Station yourself, as parking is extremely limited and not guaranteed.

🚆Train Tickets & Travel Experience

We highly recommend PeruRail, which was reliable, very comfortable, and punctual throughout our journey. The Vistadome train in particular offers an exceptional experience with its panoramic windows, allowing you to soak in Peru’s breathtaking landscapes on the way to Machu Picchu.

Journey Duration: The ride from Poroy Station (Cusco) to Aguas Calientes (Machu Picchu Station) takes approximately 3.5 hours.

Alternate Stations: There are four other train station stops en route, ideal for travelers not staying in Cusco.

Onboard Experience: Complimentary snacks and beverages are served. Enjoy live performances showcasing traditional Peruvian dances, local music, and a fashion demonstration featuring garments made from alpaca wool.

Arrival in Aguas Calientes

Upon arriving at Aguas Calientes Station, you’ll pass through a bustling artisan market, filled with souvenirs, handmade crafts, and local products. We suggest shopping here once you return from seeing Machu Picchu.

For our visit, we chose to hire a tour guide, who met us right outside the market. Communication was seamless and he coordinated the meeting point in advance, making it easy to connect. Having a guide made navigating the next steps smooth and informative.

That said, the process is straightforward even without a guide. Continue reading below for more details if you prefer to explore independently.

🚌 Bus Ride Up the Mountain

Machu Picchu is perched high in the mountains above Aguas Calientes, and the only way to reach the main entrance (aside from hiking) is by taking a Consettur bus.

To make your visit stress-free, we recommend purchasing your bus tickets in advance to avoid long lines and secure your spot.

⏱️ Timing & Logistics

Plan for at least 1 hour between your arrival at Aguas Calientes and your Machu Picchu entry time. This allows time to walk to the bus station, line up, and ride up the mountain.

Follow the signs from the train station to the bus stop. If you’re with a tour guide, they’ll typically guide you directly. If not, staff in the area are helpful and can point you in the right direction.

✅ Tips for the Bus

🎟️ Buy a bus round-trip ticket to avoid waiting in line again after your visit.

🗓️ Double-check the date format when booking online. In Peru, it’s day/month/year — different from the U.S. format.

🖨️ Print a hard copy of your tickets just in case you lose cell service.

🛂 Bring your passport (or valid ID) and your Machu Picchu entry ticket — both are required to board the bus or buy tickets in person.

🏞️ Arrival at the Top of Machu Picchu

Once you reach the top and step off the bus, you’ll find yourself at the main entrance to Machu Picchu. The atmosphere is buzzing with excitement as travelers from around the world gather to experience this incredible wonder. You’ll go through a security and ticket check, where you’ll need to present your passport and entry ticket. Follow signs or your tour guide to your assigned circuit route, beginning your unforgettable journey through the ancient Incan city.

✅ Tips

Restrooms are available near the entrance (note: this is your last chance to use the bathroom, as there are none inside the archaeological site).

You will need to pay to use the restroom, so make sure you have cash.

You are able to check in any bag packs here for a small fee to make it easy as you walk around. We recommend you carry small bags for your valuables such as wallet and passport.Final Thoughts
