While Dubai has suddenly become one of the top travel destinations in the world and the global hub of luxury, it is also a country that has several rules that you have to abide by and respect.
As you plan your trip with the help of our incredible planning guide, please review these rules below to prevent you from getting in trouble.
We do not want to make this blog to scare you, rather to educate you, so you can enjoy the beautiful country and have the best experience like we did!
Respect the culture and religion
Dubai/ UAE is predominantly a muslim country and it is important to respect the way of life in their country.
Respect for others during Ramadan
For those who may not know, Ramadan is the holy month for people who follow Islam. They fast from sunrise to sunset. During this time, they do not consume any food or water. Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public from sunrise to sunset. This rule applies to everyone, including tourists.
👉 There are some restaurants which are designated to be open during Ramadan. Please research ahead of time to ensure you do not disrespect those observing their fast.
Dress modestly
While Dubai is known to be one of the most stylish cities and a place to buy all the luxury items, it is important to know that you should cover your shoulders and knees in public spaces like malls, restaurants, and parks. Beachwear is allowed only at beaches and pools. Topless sunbathing or minimal swimwear is prohibited. In the UAE, cross-dressing is illegal and may lead to serious penalties. It is important to respect their rules and ensure you meet their dress code.
Public display of affection (PDA)
This may be surprising for many as this is not common in many countries, however kissing, hugging, and other intimate gestures are not permitted in public and can result in fines, arrest, or deportation. Please refrain from this to prevent you from getting in trouble.
Drug use
There is a strict zero‑tolerance policy for illegal drugs. It is reported that even trace amounts can lead to imprisonment or worse.
Public photography and strict privacy rules
Please remember to always ask for permission before photographing people, especially women and children. As a rule of thumb, if you wouldn’t want your photo taken by a stranger, please do not do the same.
Public behavior and social media behavior
In UAE, swearing, offensive gestures, or public drunkenness can lead to arrest or deportation. It is important to conduct yourself respectfully to prevent you from getting in trouble. The same applies on social media. They have strict cybercrime laws and it is important not to post anything inappropriate or culturally insensitive
Other Important Rules
👉Pedestrian safety: Always use designated crossings. It is illegal to jaywalk.
👉 Cohabitation: Unmarried couples may now legally share a hotel room, but some sensitivities remain. We recommend you research ahead of time.
👉 Offensive driving: Using rude gestures or reckless behavior on the road can lead to fines, vehicle impounding, or worse. Driving with any alcohol in your body is illegal.
